According to Wyoming Wildlife Fish & Game, roughly 700 grizzly bears are believed to exist within the 20 million+ protected acres of the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem, which includes Jackson Hole and both National Parks. The current estimate for black bears is 650, which provides pretty good evidence that you are most certainly in “bear country.”
While there are roughly 4 million annual visitors to the area, the odds are you will most likely come across a black bear or even a grizzly bear. They live throughout the parks and like to make their way near roadsides and trails. Because of this likely encounter, it is very important to know how to be bear aware in Jackson Hole. Below are some tips for keeping yourself and the bears safe.
Tips for how to be bear aware in Jackson Hole
- Stay at least 100 yards away from bears
- If you come across either a black or grizzly bear while driving, stay in your car to photograph the animals.
- Hike in groups and avoid hiking in the early mornings or late in the evening when bears are most active.
- Bears scare easily and are usually deterred when they hear noise. So, make noise by clapping and talking loudly every so often while on the trail.
- Keep your eyes open for signs of bears like bear scat and claw marks
- If you see a bear on the trail, do not run. Back slowly away and leave the area or walk around it.
- It is suggested when hiking to carry bear spray with you. Keep the spray in an immediately accessible place. Only use the spray for an aggressive bear.
In general, it is best to keep in mind to never approach or feed a bear.
