Visit the National Museum of Wildlife Art
If there is one thing we are wild about, it’s our local wildlife. And one of the best ways to truly appreciate it is with a visit to the National Museum of Wildlife Art. Running through April 2022, the exhibition, “National Geographic: 50 Greatest Wildlife Photographs” showcases the very best wildlife pictures from the pages of National Geographic magazine.
Elkfest and Old West Days
Travel + Leisure named Jackson Hole the No. 1 “Best places to travel in May,” mainly due to two big events; Elkfest and Old West Days. These long-standing events have been a Jackson Hole tradition for years.
Old West Days
A time-honored tradition is Jackson Hole’s Old West Days. As a sort of ode to its Old Western culture, Jackson Hole highlights its history of ranching, cowboys, and more with a week-long celebration at the end of May. It is truly one of the best times to visit Jackson Hole in 2022!
Beginning Memorial Day weekend, the popular Stage Coach rides and Jackson Hole Shootout returns to Town Square; authentic rodeos kick-off at the rodeo grounds, and it’s your chance to see one of the last horse-drawn parades in the West. There’s never a dull moment.
Elkfest
In the spring, thousands of wintering elk at the National Elk Refuge lose their antlers before they migrate in the summer. In late April, the Jackson Hole Boy Scouts and U.S. Fish and Wildlife harvest the shed antlers, for the elk racks they will then auction off to bidders at the Jackson Hole Elkfest.
Held the weekend before Memorial Day weekend, the two-day celebration, centered around the antler auction, also features the High Noon Chili Cook-Off and the start of the two-week Mountain Man Rendezvous. The auction itself is a sight to see with hundreds of antlers laid out all across Town Square and is what makes this a favorite event in Jackson Hole.
