Sure, Jackson Hole in the winter is best known for its epic ski terrain and world-class ski resorts, but there are many other winter sports to enjoy, such as fat biking. Explore Jackson Hole and the surrounding areas on two wheels and see a whole new side of what makes this part of the state so special. Here are our tips for getting started with fat biking in Jackson Hole.

The optimal time for fat biking in Jackson Hole

It goes without saying that fat biking (or fat tire biking) is meant to be enjoyed during the winter with plenty of snow. Best conditions exist when temperatures drop to 20, 15, and even 10 degrees Fahrenheit. This allows for the snow to pack down, becoming firm and safe.

Renting a fat bike

There are several local bike shops in Jackson Hole that rent fat bikes to visitors. Most will offer either a half-day rental or a full-day rental. Typical rentals come with a fat bike, helmet, repair kit & pump, plus local trail maps for guidance. Some rentals even offer tours. Teton Mountain Bike Tours offer guided tours in Grand Teton National Park and the National Elk Refuge.

Below are a few local bike rentals in town to help you get started:

  • Hoback Sports
  • Teton Mountain Bike Tours
  • Snow King Mountain

Fun for the entire family

Fat biking is a great activity that is fun for the entire family. With a variety of terrain to choose from, Jackson Hole features biking routes that everyone can pedal to, no matter the skill level. Most bike rental shops offer both adult and kid bikes, so that everyone can enjoy the ride.

Where to go

There are many places to choose from for fat biking in Jackson Hole. What you want to look for are well-groomed trails, especially if you are a beginner. A lot of the popular singletrack biking trails in the summer are converted to multi-use groomed trails in the winter, perfect for fat biking. Plus, some of the ski resorts in the area offer fat biking trails that are well-groomed and maintained.

  • Cache Creek
  • Grand Targhee Resort
  • Gros Venture Snowmobile Network
  • Teton Pass Trail Network
  • Emily’s Pond
  • Wilson Centennial Trail

What to wear

Always when enjoying winter sports, dress in layers and dress warm. You will be working a bit harder, so you want to be able to take layers off as you get warmer. Dress in clothes that wick away the moisture to keep you dry. Wear warm boots and warm gloves because your extremities will get cold faster, plus you will have a slight breeze with you as you pedal.

What to bring

In terms of water, that can be tricky. With optimal weather for fat biking being below 20 degrees, any sort of thing, such as a water bottle, that you attach to your bike will freeze. It is best to start with warm water, use insulated bottles, and if you use a camelback place it under your clothes to keep it warm.

And of course, always bring a snack along with you. You will be working hard and working up an appetite, so always come prepared with food. Be sure to also bring your phone or camera to take some amazing pictures of your journey through Jackson Hole!
